That morning, our captain agreed to take us onto the waters of the Witless Bay Ecological Reserve before sunrise. Home to North America’s largest Atlantic Puffin colony, we soon found ourselves surrounded by hundreds of birds beginning their day. As the first light spread across the calm water, one puffin lifted off from the surface, creating a moment of frantic movement against the morning stillness. Their compact wings are remarkably efficient underwater, but taking flight demands considerable effort. This individual ran across the water, wings beating rapidly, before finally lifting off the surface. The scene captures the energy of this remarkable little seabird flying over the morning sunlit waters.
