In spring, Common Loons become one of Ontario’s lakes most striking sights, displaying their spectacular breeding plumage as they return from winter down south. This loon paused on a small rise above the water while exploring the bay with its mate, seemingly searching for the perfect nesting site. Not wanting to disturb this important breeding ritual, I quietly parked my kayak among the reeds and let them pass. The pair remained in constant communication, softly chattering with each other as they inspected potential sites along the shoreline. Dressed in their finest, they seemed to embody the promise of spring, a season of courtship, nesting, and new beginnings.
