Polar bear mothers spend the winter with their new cubs in the maternity den. In February or March they emerge and spend a few days outside the den exploring their new world. In temperatures of -50C or more they will spend a short time in the den area before mother bear takes them to the sea ice to hunt for seals. Polar bears have become iconic representatives of climate change, as they experience changes in sea ice and feeding areas which threaten their survival. As the largest land carnivores on Earth adult bears command enormous respect but to see the gentle relationship between a mother bear and her new cubs is indeed a privilege and an unforgettable moment.
