At the George Reifel Bird Sanctuary in Vancouver, there are a pair of resident Sandhill Cranes. On the day I visited the cranes were doing a process called rusting. They take organic matter from the marsh and rub it on their feathers to try and discolour the grey so they will blend in better with the marsh. This process helps the birds hid from predators while nesting. The preening displays the beautiful grey feathers of the Sandhill Crane.
