As I stood on the windswept cliffs of Bonaventure Island, surrounded by thousands of Northern Gannets, my attention was drawn to a single pair only a few metres away. Against the backdrop of the sparkling Gulf of St. Lawrence, they seemed completely unaware of the world around them.
I watched as they faced one another, stretching their long necks skyward in perfect harmony. Their movements were slow and graceful. They bowed, touched bills, and raised their heads again in a beautiful courtship display that spoke of trust and devotion. The sunlight caught their golden heads and bright white feathers, making them glow against the rugged cliffside.
For several minutes, I forgot about the crowds, the noise, and even the camera in my hands. I was witnessing a private moment between two seabirds strengthening the bond that would help them raise their next chick.
It was a simple scene, yet one of the most memorable wildlife moments I experienced on Bonaventure Island.
