Before the Wind. Reflecting a nautical term for sailing with the wind at your back, this lone wild stallion stands "before the wind". Sable Island, Nova Scotia is home to the only unmanaged wild horse population in North America. About 500 horses roam this small windswept island that lies about 300km off the coast of Halifax. The horses have lived here since the mid-1700's, brought in by settlers long ago, and are now considered to be a protected and "naturalized species". The island is famous for its storms and shipwrecks, earning the name Graveyard of the Atlantic. The horses survive, despite the odds, in this remote dune landscape. Access to the island is by government permission. Debra Garside is the only professional photographer to have gained access to the island for extended periods in all four seasons, allowing her to produce an extensive body of work over the last 15 years, producing unique images of these iconic wild horses.
